Bambu sp is the taxonomic name for bamboo.
It is classified as grass in botany though people often refer
it as tree. Bamboo is the fastest growing 'tree'. By nature,
bamboo needs to be harvested. Bamboo has a very intricate
rooting system allowing the same plant to regenerate itself
and to be re-harvested every 3-5 years. Bamboo also grows
in large amounts and may be selectively harvested annually.
This makes bamboo one of the most renewable and abundant natural
resources on the planet.
Other than its abundant resource, most importantly bamboo
is one of the strongest building materials. Therefore, it
is used for housings material in some parts of the world and
also for other kinds of products. Bamboo's tensile strength
is 28,000 per square inch while the steel is 23,000. Bamboo
has proven to be more durable than Red Oak and is as hard
as Maple. Bamboo is extremely strong, making it a rival of
steel.

There are more than 1000 species of bamboo
on earth. It makes bamboo adaptable to different climates.
Bamboo, for instance, tolerates extremes of precipitation,
from 30-250 inches of annual rainfall.
Furniture made of bamboo is simple and also functional in
its usage. It still gives beauty and naturalness either for
modern or traditional style. Now bamboo is made into various
kinds of furniture, chair, bench, bar stool, etc. In short,
bamboo is able to fulfill all the needs.

The
Making of Bamboo
Furniture |
|
|
Making bamboo furniture does
require a long process. The most important step in bamboo furniture
making is the material selection. Having good quality bamboo determines
the end result of the furniture. |
| |
|
|
|
Our bamboo-made furniture relies on the
quality of material. Only excellent bamboo quality can be
produced into furniture. Our bamboo is selected, among others,
based on its age, size (length and diameter) and surface when
it is still young, which is indicated by the green color.
We obtain the large diameter bamboo from Tabanan, a hub of
bamboo in Bali and the smaller diameter ones from Bangli.
Remember that we only use excellent quality bamboos.
We also use traditional way to produce our bamboo-made furniture.
The bamboos are first washed in the river. After that, bamboo
is dried. It is exposed under the sunlight. Therefore, the
drying process depends on the weather and sun's intensity.
The longest drying process takes one month. The drying aims
at killing the fungi that might grow on bamboo. Therefore,
it should be totally dry.

The bamboo loops then enter the cutting process.
The cutting process is manually performed in order to keep
it from breaking. The bamboo is cut to meet the required design.
Our experienced, skill craftsmen do the process.
The next stage is to re-wash bamboo using
certain material to assure that the bamboo is clean and will
not be infected by any fungi or insect. The drying process,
which follows the re-washing does not take a long time. Most
importantly the inner part of the bamboo should be completely
dry.

Later stage is to model and design the
product. It can be made into chair, table, bench, cabinetry
and other kind of furniture. The process entirely uses the
hands and is done by skilled craftsmen.
Then, the bamboo-made furniture is brushed and some small
holes are made on some bamboo nodes. Some anti-mildew or anti-insect
solution is inserted. The last step is furnishing the bamboo.
In this stage, coating may be used to protect
|
|
| |
|
bamboo from any fungi and insects infection.
Anti-UV coating may also be used to resist the bamboo from
ultraviolet damage and fading.
Bamboo-made furniture is best for interior house. As long
as there is no strong exposition of sunlight and it is not
stained with water, the bamboo furniture can last long.
